This data story aims to insight the distribution out of school Children by Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, and consider the factors that causes this issue.
Nigeria is divided into six geopolitical zones which include: North west, North East, North Central, south west, South East, South South. Each zone has its ethics, economic and social behavior.
Out of school Children according to statistics,data from (EDUCELEB). Nigeria has million out of school Children from different zone,A breakdown disclose the following distribution.
1.North west:(3,490,671)
2.North east: (2,001,036)
3.North central:(1,329,111)
4.South west:(1,451,740)
5.South east:(713,176)
6.South South:(1,208,182)
There are many factors that can lead to children being out of school, especially in the North west and North East, which include poverty,
Poverty is the most contributing out of school Children, financial issue can lead to children out of school, because if parents cannot afford the requirements for education of their children such as: school fees, text book, transport,e.t.c these can cause out of school Children
insecurity: this is another challenge that treath in children education, insecurity in some part of Nigeria can lead to children out of school,due to illegal act of taking of school Children, holding them with the intentionof demanding a ransom for their release.
child labor: Child labor is the illegal practice of employing children under the age of 18 in dangerous, harmful, or exploitative conditions. It can involve children working in dangerous factories, mines, and fields, or being forced into prostitution or domestic servitude. Many children who are victims of child labor are unable to attend school.Addressing this challenges requires multifaceted approach,
Including effort to reduce poverty, improve security and promote education.
According to Educeleb report, the total number of children who are out of school in Nigeria from the six geopolitical zone are 10,193,918.
The report shows that the South Eastern region including Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo and Anambra State has the highest number of children out of school with the sum total of 713,176.
The North Western region; Sokoto, Zamfara, Kaduna, Kebi, Kano and Katsina top second with the total of 3,490671 compared to the North Eastern part (Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa and Taraba) that has a total of 2,001,038.
Similarly, the South Western region which comprises of six States including Lagos, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti and Ogun has a total of 1,451,740 while the North Central part; FCT, Niger, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi and Benue took second as the lowest zone with the total of 1,329,111.
Conclusivelly, the South South region was said to have the lowest number of children out of school with the total of 1,208,182.The South South region includes;Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, River, Akwa Ibom and Cross River State.
